Keratoconus, a progressive thinning of the cornea, is a relative frequent disease with an incidence of 1 in 1000 in the general population often affecting young patients.   Eventually 21% of keratoconus patients require corneal transplantation.

New Treatments

Collagen crosslinking by the photosensitizer riboflavin and UVA light is an effective means for stabilizing the cornea in keratoconus.

Additional refracture corrections can also be considered to reduce the anomalous astigmatism and myopia using the topography treatment of the Allegretto 400Hz Excimer Laser.

We have been performing this treatment for keratoconus in Cyprus since April 2006.

We use the Intralaser Laser (used for creation of the flap in LASIK) to create 1mm channels within the cornea for the intac rings.   Intacs gently reshape the curvature of the cornea so that light rays focus properly on the retina.   The implants can be removed or exchanged if necessary.   The procedure with the Intralase for Intacs is safe and quick.
